Robert Palmer se narodil 19. ledna 1949 v Anglii, ale své dětství strávil na Maltě. Po návratu do Anglie jako teenager zpíval v několika kapelách.
Své první album vydal v r. 1974.
V 1975 se přestěhoval i s rodinou do New Yorku.
